Why Trump is picking Indian Americans for key roles

For decades, the Democrats had relied on the votes of Indian Americans, a fast-growing immigrant population with high election turnout rates. However, this political alliance may be shifting. In the November 2024 election, as the United States moved to the right amid growing discontent over the economy and immigration, cracks appeared in what had been a solid foundation of support. In districts in California and New York where many Indian American and other Asian immigrants reside, Donald Trump and other Republican candidates far outperformed expectations, in part by opposing Democratic policies in those states. Since the election, President Trump has appointed several Indian Americans to prominent positions in his administration, signaling a rightward shift among this highly educated, affluent voting group.
