Amidst a cloud of uncertainty, a potential federal ban on the TikTok app in the United States is rumored to take effect on Sunday, January 19. It was initially proposed due to allegations from the U.S. Congress suggesting that the Chinese government has ownership and influence over ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company. If this ban materializes, Americans will be barred from downloading the app from app stores, and TikTok might face a full shutdown within the country, rendering the app inoperable even if it’s pre-downloaded onto a device. Yet, no confirmation has been made regarding the path forward if the law, signed in April of 2024, is upheld. In pursuit of a similar alternative, Americans have begun downloading RedNote, where they are humorously called “TikTok refugees.” It seems like a feast of cultural exchange, but who knows how far this trend will go?
