Mike Johnson, upon being reelected as Speaker, vowed to drastically reduce the size of government and push for legislation to dismantle the ‘administrative state’. Following appeals from President-elect Donald Trump, Johnson secured his re-election. He claimed that the public desires an ‘America First’ agenda and expressed regret over the previous four years of divided government. Johnson attributed inflation and ‘weak leadership’ to the American people’s plight and vowed to overturn what he considers the totalitarian ‘fourth branch’ of government, the administrative state. He mentioned the need to create a streamlined, efficient, and energetic federal workforce and emphasized fiscal responsibility. Johnson also committed to investigating the now-disbanded House Select Committee on the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and expressed disapproval of President Joe Biden’s decision to award medals to committee members.
