In Mayor Brandon Johnson’s initial 2025 budget proposal, he proposed a stunning $300 million property tax increase, claiming that he was ‘asking families to lean in and do a little bit more.’ Unable to persuade these families, his request was eventually halved to $150 million and then further cut to $68.5 million. However, due to the discontent among Chicagoans, this request was ultimately rejected. Johnson’s budget proposal was eventually passed by the Chicago City Council, including increases in shopping bag fees, parking garage taxes, streaming service taxes, car lease taxes, and software license taxes, among other measures. However, these actions did not resolve the fundamental issues and may have exacerbated social inequality.
