The scene where two teachers from opposing sides of the ideological divide in ‘Bucks County, USA’ sit down to hash out their issues, seems peaceful on the surface but hides undercurrents. On one side is Katherine, a retired teacher with a progressive mindset, and on the other is Vonna, a conservative teacher. Both are tired of the intense rhetoric, but Katherine’s assertion that both sides are making hateful comments about each other falls on deaf ears as Vonna focuses solely on her personal grievances. While the two teachers try to maintain a civil dialogue, Vonna ultimately returns to her talking point, ignoring Katherine’s viewpoint. This approach resembles the rigidity of certain conservative mentalities, as if only her perspective is the truth. Moreover, the story of the two teenage friends, Evi and Vanessa, while hopeful, develops at a slow pace, failing to fully demonstrate how they navigate their inevitable differences. As for Paul Martino, the self-proclaimed leader of the local conservative movement, his image is as simple as it is directly drawn from some common American political archetypes that are prevalent throughout the film. These archetypes are随处可见, but ‘Bucks County, USA’ seems more focused on hearing everyone’s voice rather than forming its own clear perspective. Overall, the film tries to balance different viewpoints while also losing its own distinct voice.
