The American Cancer Society’s latest report reveals both encouraging trends and concerning realities: while overall cancer mortality is on the decline, the number of cancer cases among women and young adults is on the rise. The report indicates that cancer mortality rates have decreased by 34% from 1991 to 2022, but the rates of oral, pancreatic, uterine, and liver cancers are increasing. The report also highlights racial inequalities in cancer mortality, with Native Americans having rates double or triple those of Whites for kidney, liver, stomach, and cervical cancers. Black people are twice as likely to die of prostate, stomach, and uterine cancers compared to Whites, and 50% more likely to die from preventable cervical cancer. The report also finds that cancer cases among women and young adults are increasing, with women aged 50 to 64 now having more cases than men. The cancer rates in women under 50 are now 82% higher than their male counterparts, a significant increase from 51% in 2002. It seems that women have become the new ‘vulnerable group’ in the cancer issue.
