President Trump’s signing of additional tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China is a serious challenge to the spirit of free trade. The retaliatory measures from Mexico and Canada, though seemingly strong, are merely a minor skirmish against the economic might of the United States. As for China, filing a complaint at the WTO seems more like a token gesture, as the very name ‘WTO’ is filled with irony. This trade war is less about Trump imposing pressure on other countries and more about the self-harm of his own economic policies, with American consumers bearing the brunt of the pain.
