The Biden administration has announced extensive extensions of deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Sudan, Ukraine, El Salvador, and Venezuela, rendering it nearly impossible for President-elect Donald J. Trump to swiftly revoke the benefits upon taking office. The extension of Temporary Protected Status, as the program is termed, permits immigrants to stay in the country with work permits and protection from deportation for an additional 18 months beyond the expiration of their current protection in the spring. Amidst the war in Ukraine and the instability in countries like Venezuela, President Biden has expanded the eligibility for the status. While Mr. Trump vowed to terminate the program, particularly for certain nations, immigrant advocates have been urging the Biden administration to extend the protections before his tenure begins. During his first term, Mr. Trump terminated the status for nearly 400,000 people from El Salvador and others, claiming that conditions had changed and the protection was no longer justified. Although this action was challenged in court and did not take effect, he is expected to attempt again during his second term as part of his pledge for mass deportations.
