The fact that Trump has become America’s first felon-president speaks volumes not just about him as a politician, but also about the robustness of the American political system. The Supreme Court’s 5-4 vote to reject Trump’s request for a delay in the court’s decision serves as a stark reminder that the system is still functional, despite appearances. With Trump seemingly invincible in politics, Democrats are disheartened, and America’s wealthiest individuals are lining up to support him, offering generous donations. Tech giants, once considered more liberal, are swiftly adjusting their policies to align with his. In other nations, a leader with such power might easily evade justice in court. However, Trump’s continued accountability illustrates that, even in the chaotic landscape of American politics, there are still rules to be followed. This is of particular importance for Trump, as he faces the possibility of facing the consequences of his actions if he fulfills some of the promises he has made as president. Despite potential embarrassment about his felony status, Trump may well embrace it, referencing his sweeping election victory and asserting that the courts are in error. With his second term approaching and the presidential election off-limits, it seems unlikely that his felony status will deter him. But if he is as smart as he claims, he should take note of the events of January 10th as a cautionary tale that he cannot act with absolute impunity when he takes office on January 20th.
