Donald Trump’s latest sentencing: The President-elect avoids jail as he escapes punishment in a hush money case. Trump is vowing to appeal his verdict in a case he branded as an act of ‘lawfare’ by his political enemies. Justice Juan Merchan sentenced Trump to ‘unconditional discharge’ in New York just 10 days before his second inauguration. The same day, special counsel Jack Smith resigned from the Department of Justice, days after delivering his report on his federal criminal investigations into Trump to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Trump’s attorneys are also fighting in court to keep the report from the public. Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records by a jury of New Yorkers last May. Trump is accused of concealing reimbursement payments to Michael Cohen for his check to Stormy Daniels, whose story about having sex with Trump threatened to derail his 2016 presidential campaign. Trump plans to appeal. He will be the first person convicted of a felony to hold the office of the presidency.
