President Trump’s move to assert greater control over the federal workforce appears as yet another attempt to strengthen his grip on the federal bureaucracy. He seems to believe that left-leaning bureaucrats are out to thwart his agenda, thus he should possess greater power than past presidents to place his loyalists throughout the government. However, these reforms seem to challenge the fundamental principles of the Foreign Service: that career diplomats should be hired based on qualifications and expertise, not political views, and that dissent should be welcomed rather than punished. The American Foreign Service Association’s challenge, it appears, is to uphold the integrity and nonpartisan nature of the Foreign Service amidst this test.
