The history of sports betting can be traced back to the ancient Greek Olympics and the Roman Coliseum events, but its legality has undergone a long and winding road. From baseball’s lifetime bans to the PASPA Act, and to the US Supreme Court’s decision, all of this seems to hint at the rise and fall of the betting industry. However, despite all this, the industry has developed with an unstoppable momentum. From $6.6 billion in 2018 to $121 billion in 2023, the surge in numbers seems to obscure the underlying concerns. Researchers have found that with the prosperity of the betting industry, gambling addiction is also on the rise, which inevitably raises the question: who is paying the price in this betting banquet?
