Scaringe, the CEO of Rivian, is touting their Level 2+ autonomy as the next big thing, but it sounds more like a fancy name for adaptive cruise control. Calling it ‘hands-free, eyes-on-the-road’ is like naming a dog ‘Sir Paws-a-Lot.’ And let’s not even get started on the ‘Level 3’ autonomy. I guess it’s good they’re training AI, but what about the humans who can’t resist the temptation to daydream? Rivian’s ‘autonomy road ahead’ seems like a detour into driverless limbo. Mercedes-Benz? They’ve had ‘Level 3’ for years, and let’s not pretend Rivian’s just catching up. This whole hands-free, eyes-off thing sounds like a license to multi-task while your car is doing the driving, but if something goes wrong, whose fault is it? The car’s, or the driver who was too busy to keep their eyes on the road?rivian autonomy road ahead is nothing but a fancy marketing term for the future of distracted driving.
