COLUMN: The issue of third parties in American politics

The conundrum of the left seems to lie in their flawed understanding of compromise. It appears they have an odd proclivity for choosing to lose everything rather than some. Although the American two-party system is widely criticized, the path to change is not paved by blindly voting for third parties in high-stakes elections. The birth of viable third parties is not the result of upset victories in high-stakes elections but rather begins at the grassroots level, accumulating legitimacy. So why does the left repeatedly choose to nominate candidates who have no chance in key elections? The voice of the left is undoubtedly important, but choosing silence or voting for candidates who are vague on key issues seems to do little to truly address the problem.
