With the return of Donald J. Trump to power, the critics, prosecutors, and perceived enemies who once sought to hold him accountable now find themselves trembling with fear before a president who has vowed to seek revenge. Mr. Trump has pledged to investigate and punish his adversaries, especially those involved in his four prosecutions and the investigation into the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. These threats, coupled with his stated intention to pardon at least some of those who carried out the Capitol assault, have left many in Washington and elsewhere on edge, fearing not only governmental action against them but also the unpredictable, unrestrained retaliation by his supporters. Those who were attacked by the pro-Trump crowd on January 6, 2021, and have since been vocal critics, are now worried about the potential escalation of violence and threats against them and their families. This situation brings to mind the irony that those who once targeted Trump supporters are now also concerned for their own safety.
