Former Vice President Pence’s attendance at Trump’s inauguration is a ritualistic nod to the status of former presidents and vice presidents, yet it seems to do little to restore his luster. Pence was Trump’s running mate, a role that now seems more of an awkward legacy than a point of pride. Trump picked JD Vance over Pence, a choice that seems to have left Pence in an embarrassing position. Pence’s forced exit from the Capitol, amid chants of his hanging, and his subsequent split from Trump, even briefly challenging him in the Republican primaries, seems to paint a picture of a man caught in the shadow of Trump’s influence.
