Behind him lie the metal-and-glass doors through which inflamed protesters, swept up by his false claims of election theft, burst into the Capitol, armed with clubs and irritants. To his left, the scene of raucous rioters and outnumbered officers engaging in hand-to-hand combat. To his right, the prostrate form of a woman fighting for her last breath amidst the blood-soaked turmoil. Before him, the dozen marble steps leading down to the presidential lectern, adorned with the presidential seal—the same steps where, four years prior, his banners were waved above the frenzied crowd like spears. This tableau serves as a fitting epitome of his political persona.
