Canadian politicians have denounced Donald Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. At a press conference at his Florida country club Mar-a-Lago, Trump expressed his desire to take control of Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. Trump wrote on social media about his wish to merge with the US’s northern neighbor, stating that many Canadians love being the 51st state. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has announced his resignation but remains in office until a replacement is chosen, has firmly rejected the incoming president’s idea. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, also a candidate for the prime ministership, expressed her opposition to Trump’s plan. The opposition to Trump’s take-over plan seems to be nonpartisan. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre strongly condemned the idea. Canada is the United States’ largest trading partner, purchasing more American exports than any other country. However, the US has a significant trade deficit with Canada, largely due to the amount of oil Canada exports. At the same press conference, Trump also announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He also refused to rule out the use of military force to retake the Panama Canal or seize Greenland.
