The American political landscape is陷 into polarization, with severe damage to the three major branches of government: legislation, judiciary, and executive. Since the early 1990s, political polarization has been on the rise in the U.S. House of Representatives, with the Senate following a decade later. This trend has accelerated after the 2010 elections, with Republicans experiencing more noticeable polarization than Democrats. Ideological differences between the two major parties are now greater than at any time since the American Civil War. State legislatures, even in traditionally nonpartisan systems like Nebraska’s, are also experiencing increasing levels of polarization. Congressional bipartisanship has declined by 30% since 1989, leading to legislative gridlock and a severe challenge to governance. Many members of Congress are spending time on social media, appearing on partisan cable news, and fundraising instead of legislating. Congresswoman Victoria Spartz has refused to caucus with either party, describing herself as a serious legislator and finance professional, not a clown. Congressman Gerry Connolly has also addressed the issue, noting that some of his colleagues view their job as performative…talking endlessly on the floor or appearing on cable television. The approval rating of Congress is just 15%, with most Americans believing that lawmakers rarely pass laws in the public interest and three-fourths feeling their concerns go unheard. This erosion of trust has further complicated governance, reflecting a political crisis and a failure of democracy.
