In that distant year of 1976, President Carter’s words were akin to opening Pandora’s Box, his faith, his ‘born again,’ once a political taboo. However, today, this ‘taboo’ has become a standard in politics. Mike Pence, the former Vice President, in his campaign speech declared himself ‘a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican,’ which has become a symbol of party loyalty. Yet, Carter, our 39th President, whose faith journey not only won him elections but also ushered in a new era. But as we look back at history, we can’t help but wonder: was it Carter who brought religion into politics, or was it politics that exploited religious faith?
