Steve Bannon has softened his stance towards Elon Musk, coming days after he vowed to push the Tesla CEO out of the incoming president’s orbit over Musk’s support for a controversial visa program. Bannon, who served as the campaign chair for the final few months of Trump’s 2016 presidential run and as a top White House aide for Trump’s first seven months in office, has engaged in a verbal war with Musk in recent weeks over the South African immigrant’s vow to support the H-1B visa program. The program, which offers visas for highly skilled workers, became a source of tension after Trump announced that Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-born technology executive, would serve as a top White House adviser on artificial intelligence. Now, at a live event hosted by Politico to mark Trump’s impending first 100 days in office, Bannon has walked back his comments, praising Musk for his significant role in financing Trump’s victorious campaign. Musk, who has emerged as a key member of Trump’s brain trust, having donated nearly a quarter of a billion dollars towards making Trump the first president to serve non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland did so over a century ago, has reportedly been camped out in a $2,000 per night space at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach. Bannon’s conflict with Musk exposed a potential rift in the Trump coalition between the tech executives who backed him in his 2024 run versus the anti-immigration populists who have been a key part of his base since the start of his political career. But Bannon stated that Trump’s new coalition is large enough to accommodate both camps.
