As presidents face defeat in their terms, they seem to follow a script that is all too familiar: first comes the sorrow, then reflection, and finally promises for the future. From George Washington’s warning about the dangers of partisanship to George Bush’s lamentation over his loss to Bill Clinton in 1993, and Donald Trump’s vow of a comeback four years ago after defeat, these are all like mandatory courses in a political career. However, whether these outgoing presidents can truly rise above personal vendettas to contribute to the long-term development of the nation remains a matter of doubt.
