However, even before he takes the oath of office on Monday, cracks have begun to appear in his newly expanded coalition. With their divisions, the incoming president and his party are being compelled to confront a reality that has often led Democrats into trouble: A larger tent means more space for fighting beneath it. In recent weeks, some members of Congress from the Republican Party have turned a blind eye to Mr. Trump’s threats of military force against Greenland. Republicans from agricultural states have been uneasy about his plan to impose new tariffs on all goods entering the United States. Opponents of abortion have grumbled about his selection of an abortion rights supporter for his cabinet. Mr. Trump’s embrace of tech billionaires has caused discomfort among conservatives who blame these companies for censoring Republican views and corrupting the youth.
