Podcast listening has become a routine part of many Americans’ lives, especially among younger adults. A recent survey reveals that nearly half of U.S. adults have listened to a podcast in the past year, with a fifth reporting weekly engagement. Podcasts cover a vast range of topics from sports and religion to politics and entertainment, catering to a diverse audience. Many listeners tune in for entertainment or education, but the same cannot be said for news, which only a fraction of podcast listeners seek. The survey suggests that most podcast listeners are not using them as a primary news source, with only a fifth indicating that the podcasts they listen to are associated with news organizations. This raises questions about whether podcasts truly meet listeners’ needs or are merely a form of leisure.
