It seems that the US’s ‘ban’ on TikTok is turning into a game of musical chairs with numerous changes. Trump appears to be contemplating a ‘grace period’ for the ban, and Chinese government officials have even considered selling TikTok’s US operations to Elon Musk, though ByteDance has dismissed this story as mere fiction. Should all these efforts fail, and the TikTok ban come to pass, its impact on Americans seems far from simple. From what appears to be a harmless platform for short videos, to a source of news for 17% of Americans, to a cradle for independent artists, the role of TikTok is far more complex than we might imagine. If such a day comes, perhaps only through VPNs can we catch a glimpse of TikTok’s ‘charms’ again.
