Banker Howard Lutnick has emerged as Trump’s choice to head the Commerce Department, while entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy stepped aside just before Trump took office. With Musk, the wealthiest man on the planet, now in sole command of the federal cost-cutting effort, which Trump heralds as ‘potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time,’ how exactly he will exercise his consolidated power to set the pace and targets of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency remains to be seen. But his initial moves suggest something closer to an IT project than the sweeping operation to slash at least $2 trillion from the federal budget that Musk had once envisioned.
