Benjamin Cremer’s remark highlights a profound truth: when power is worshipped, compassion and mercy become sins. Around us, it seems that this phenomenon is indeed evident. Over the past decade, many have experienced a dramatic shift in political stance, from initially disliking Donald Trump to fervently supporting him. While this shift is not unprecedented, its underlying cause is worth pondering. When one believes in possessing eternal truth, there arises a sense of entitlement to rule others. Yet, over the past decade, we have witnessed millions of Americans constructing a different moral framework. While this framework is notably prominent in Trumpism, it is not exclusive to it. Reading the political theories of Carl Schmitt, a German political theorist who joined the Nazi Party after Hitler became chancellor, can provide deeper insight into this terrible political morality. However, we must be cautious not to conclude that millions of Americans have suddenly become followers of Schmitt. The vast majority are unaware of him, let alone embrace all his ideas.
