As if time had stood still, the Oval Office from four years ago, from which President Donald Trump reluctantly departed, was reassembled in almost identical fashion within a few hours. From the cream wool rug with the olive branch border, designed by Nancy Reagan for her husband, to the red button wooden box on the desk used to summon a valet for a Diet Coke, everything seemed like it was from the past. The portrait of President Andrew Jackson, albeit a different painting, was back on the wall. The only reminder of the man who beat him four years ago was a letter in his top drawer, which Trump seemed to forget about until a reporter reminded him. However, the question of whether the perpetual sense of chaos that hung over the West Wing during the first four years will return during Trump’s second term remains to be seen.
