President Trump has ordered the establishment of a massive detention facility for ‘criminal aliens’ at Guantánamo Bay, an initiative that seems to be a part of his extensive immigration crackdown. Yet, the details of this grand scheme remain elusive, with Trump merely instructing the Defense and Homeland Security departments to make the necessary preparations. ‘We have 30,000 beds at Guantánamo for the worst of the criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,’ he declared. ‘Some of them are so wicked that we cannot even trust the countries to hold them, so we are sending them to Guantánamo.’ He boasts that this move will ‘double our capacity instantly,’ and that Guantánamo is a ‘place that is tough to escape from.’ In recent weeks, about 40,000 immigrants have been confined to private detention centers and local jails across the nation, due to funding limitations. The addition of 30,000 beds would significantly expand the government’s detention capabilities. The site on the 45-square-mile base, opposite the Pentagon’s prison for terrorism suspects, could accommodate these 30,000 deportees.
