European leaders have warned that a trade war with the United States would destabilize economies on both sides of the Atlantic, after President Trump issued threats to impose tariffs on the European Union. The threats seem increasingly plausible, as President Trump has signed executive orders imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. It’s no surprise that Trump has been criticizing the EU for not buying enough American cars and farm products. Europe has been preparing for a potential trade war for months, with a ‘Trump task force’ quietly operating within the European Commission to draft potential scenarios and responses. Denmark’s Prime Minister even stated that while they don’t support fighting allies, a collective and robust response is needed if the U.S. imposes tough tariffs on Europe. It appears that China might be the hidden winner in this trade war.
