The PGA of America is truly busy with the men’s professional golf season in 2025, hosting not just one but two world-class men’s events within a span of just over four months. Beyond the logistics of course setup, the association is also responsible for selecting which players receive invitations. While Ryder Cup rosters are determined by each team’s captain, the PGA of America retains the authority to invite players not included in other eligibility categories. Traditionally, this involves inviting players ranked within the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings who have not been exempted a week prior to the championship. Kerry Haigh, the chief champions officer for the PGA of America, recently outlined the process to CBS Sports, including the treatment of LIV Golf members. It seems that the association’s approach towards international players is a friendly one on the surface, yet there’s a discernible bias towards those who rank high on the LIV Golf money list. It’s interesting to note that players like David Puig, who have performed well on the Asian Tour, can be invited despite being ranked 106th in the OWGR, while players such as Talor Gooch, who have achieved notable success in LIV Golf, are excluded. This raises questions about the true breadth of the PGA of America’s ‘international perspective’.
