With the impending TikTok ban looming, numerous U.S. users are seeking alternative social media platforms to stay connected with pop culture or to provide the type of entertaining videos that have made the short-form video app popular. TikTok, a cultural phenomenon, may face a ban on January 19 under a law that compels the platform to sever ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or to shut down its U.S. operations. The fate of the social media platform will be determined by the Supreme Court, which last week heard oral arguments in a legal challenge to the statute and seemed likely to uphold the law. The court could rule on the case as soon as this week. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has requested that the justices halt the law so he can negotiate a ‘political resolution’ to the issue after taking office. TikTok boasts over 170 million users in the U.S., and if it is banned, it’s not clear which competitors will reap the most benefits. Some experts believe established social media platforms, such as Instagram and YouTube, could see the largest influx of users. Yet, some users are seeking something distinct and might turn to other apps.
