India has struck a deal with the United States to purchase additional American fossil fuels and combat aircraft, as well as to ease tariffs on imported goods, following a meeting at the White House between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump. Trump had threatened to impose punitive tariffs on India unless concessions were made to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries. During the joint press conference, Modi referred to Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan and suggested a version for India: ‘Make India Great Again – Miga’. However, the shift in India’s energy imports towards the US, the world’s largest producer of oil and gas, may conflict with its climate change commitments. The energy and strategic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in competition with China, has also raised concerns.
