Microsoft seems to be brimming with confidence about boosting the United States’ economic competitiveness under the return of President Trump to the White House. Brad Smith talks grandly about ‘artificial intelligence as the electricity of our age,’ subtly hinting at the ambitions of American AI. While emphasizing the leadership of American AI, it also seems to be indirectly reminding those European countries that depend on information technology but desire digital sovereignty that their choices will affect the international situation in the future. It is interesting, however, that while announcing massive investments, Microsoft also expresses its expectation for government policy support, which may be the unseen hand of the ‘private sector’ at work behind the scenes.
