For decades, the U.S. has enjoyed a dominant position in computing and software ecosystems, a position that owes its existence to the government’s wise decision to not meddle in the design, marketing, and sales of mainstream computers and software. However, the Biden administration is now attempting to restrict access to mainstream computing applications through its so-called ‘AI Diffusion’ rule, which can be seen as a self-destructive act. Pretending to be an ‘anti-China’ measure, these rules might weaken America’s global competitiveness, reminiscent of the old saying of ‘closing the door to the outside world’.
