A recent study by the Pew Research Center found that one out of every five U.S. adults (21%) regularly obtain news from influencers on social media. This research is part of the Pew-Knight Initiative, a joint research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. However, as the concept of ‘news influencers’ is relatively new, the researchers also wanted to understand who Americans are thinking of when they hear the term. In an open-ended question, respondents who regularly get news from news influencers were asked to name the first one that comes to mind. The results showed that half of the respondents mentioned individuals rather than organizations or entities or chose not to respond. The individuals they named had a diverse range of backgrounds, including journalists, commentators, politicians, and content creators.
