Isuzu, the name that doesn’t quite roll off the tongue like ‘Honda’ or ‘Nissan’, attempts to inject a dose of ‘sporty’ into their lineup with the 4200R, only to end up with a design that looks like it’s been in a time warp. I mean, who needs a fax machine in a car, let alone one with a mid-engine V-8? And talk about ‘discreet’ rear doors, they’re so discreet, they’re almost invisible. But hey, at least it had the Lotus touch, right? Unfortunately, Lotus was also part of the General Motors family, so the 4200R was doomed from the start – a victim of corporate politics and a market that clearly wasn’t ready for its ‘future’ design. It’s amazing what you can do in a video game, but in the real world, the 4200R was a concept so ahead of its time, it had no idea where it was. Now, that’s what I call a ‘concept car’ – one that never quite made it out of the starting gate.
