‘I won’t come out to watch him’: scepticism among British public over Trump’s second state visit

It’s a classic Shakespearean drama, isn’t it? The British public playing the lead roles of Hamlet and Ophelia, torn between their affection for the Queen and their disgust for the ‘president who is a man, not a king.’ Keir Starmer, our Hamlet, is caught in the middle, trying to balance loyalty to the throne and the people’s disdain for Trump, like a tightrope walker balancing on the edge of a cliff. The ‘centre ground remains the crucial space in British politics’ – but that’s like saying the middle of a pool table is the key to winning a snooker game. And as for the 27% who want Starmer to be more Trump-like, they must be those same 27% who thought a rubber duck would make a great presidential candidate. The ‘Trumpist approach’ might be ‘disruptive populism,’ but it seems more like a recipe for political popcorn – loud, crunchy, and leaves a mess behind. The UCL Policy Lab is like the voice of the chorus, reminding everyone that despite the hoopla, the British political stage is still the cradle of common sense. As for the 27% who voted for Reform UK, they must be the same 27% who think a sandwich shop is a great place for foreign policy discussions. And Ella Barron, the American moving to Windsor, is like the lone voice of reason in the wilderness, hoping Trump won’t ‘destroy the US presidency as an institution’ – a hope that’s about as likely as finding a four-leaf clover in a field of dandelions.
