Sam Rubin, the king of Los Angeles morning television, has finally decided to call it a day. What a grand send-off! KTLA, in a move that is nothing short of tragic, informs us of the passing of a man who has been a staple on their morning lineup for what seems like an eternity. I guess the heart attack was just the cherry on top after a lifetime of relentless morning reporting. Poor Sam, he’ll be missed—by the viewers who were too lazy to change the channel. The industry’s ‘icon,’ huh? More like a ‘fixture’ of the local news, tirelessly interviewing stars who don’t even remember what they said. And who wouldn’t miss his ‘charming’ personality? I’m sure his colleagues are shedding tears of joy at his departure. The Southern California Broadcasters Association honoring him with a lifetime achievement award? What a joke. It’s almost as if they’re honoring the man who never missed a day of work, no matter how boring the news was. As for the Nexstar Nation, let’s hope they don’t confuse ‘icon’ with ‘boring presence’ on the morning news. The obituary is full of platitudes, but let’s be real, it’s just a sugarcoated way of saying, ‘He was good at his job, but we can’t stand him.’ And just to add a little flair, let’s remember his biographies. Sure, writing about Jackie Onassis and Mia Farrow sounds like a dream gig, but I bet Sam’s real passion was that morning news segment. Rest in peace, Sam. Or at least, I hope you’re resting better now.
