Ah, the good old days of International Harvester, when they thought they could out-Jeep Jeep with a truck that was more about comfort than capability. I mean, what’s next? A fridge with a sunroof? The Scout 80 was like a potluck dinner, borrowing parts from every corner of the factory but the kitchen. It’s impressive how they managed to make a V8 engine into a four-cylinder, but then again, if you can’t make a decent engine, who cares? And the whole ‘Scout SUV was built to store booze’ theory? I’m sure the customers were thrilled at the thought of their SUVs doubling as mini-wine cellars. It’s a classic example of ‘if you build it, they will steal it’ – but in this case, the ‘it’ was an SUV that was about as secure as a beach party. Now, the Scout is just a quirky relic in a sea of off-roaders that have left it in the dust. Jeep must be feeling pretty smug right about now.
