What a delightful spectacle, Mazda’s CX-50 Hybrid, an ‘innovative’ offspring of the RAV4 Hybrid that even Toyota’s PR department wouldn’t be proud of. It’s a marvel of engineering, where they’ve managed to take the ‘Zoom-Zoom’ spirit and convert it into a powertrain that’s as smooth as a flat tire. Kudos, Mazda, for not reinventing the wheel—though, to be fair, the wheel is still struggling to keep up with this ‘revolutionary’ hybrid. The fuel economy? Just like a regular car, except with the added bonus of a hybrid system that’s as reliable as a politicians’ promises. And who could forget the safety ratings? They’ve certainly set a new bar for mediocrity. It’s refreshing to see Mazda offer just three trims; it’s as if they’ve realized that less is more, especially when it comes to complexity and innovation.
