Ah, the esteemed Robert G. Clark Jr., the trailblazer of segregationist solitude in the Mississippi State Legislature. Such a charming and independent soul, he managed to secure a seat all to himself, surrounded by an ocean of segregationist sea. One wonders, did he ever find that lone watermelon to be a delightful companion? And what a delightful surprise when he was ‘cut off’ from speaking, one might say, a symbolic silencing that spoke volumes. Poor Mr. Clark, all that effort to be the first Black man in the state legislature, only to be met with a solo desk and the occasional watermelon gift. Bravo, Mississippi, for keeping the ‘progress’ going strong!
